Baduk to me is one of the most beautiful games ever created. I see this project as a chance to show people its beauty in a more generally accepted form, music. This was only partially successful. The program translated the moves made in a game of Baduk to notes and then by playing those notes in the sequence they were generated it would create a unique song. The frequency of a note was determined by how many allied stones were nearby and the length of the note was determined by its proximity to an enemy stone. The goal of this was to express the large sweeping moves of the opening into large powerful notes. It created a series of long single notes that were not very interesting to listen to. I believe more complex sounds are needed to try and express the complexity of the opening. The mid game is where this program truly shined. It was very successful at translating the chaos and conflict of life and death battles for control of the board.
I would like one day to come back to this project and add a larger range of musical generation. First I would like to add a feature to recognize common “shapes” or group of stones that could then be represented as a more complicated sounds. Second I would like to fix the opening and have it generate the sounds I want. Finally, I would like to give the user the ability to use different types of instruments to generate the notes.
