Humans Vs. Zombies

Humans Vs. Zombies is a live action role play game that generally takes place on college campuses.  This game was originally created at Goucher College in 2005 and has since spread and  been modified at each school it is played at.  I help to run the 2010 spring game and the 2011 fall game at S.U.N.Y. Stony Brook.  Once the game begins any human player tagged by a zombie player becomes a zombie.  A zombie must “feed” or tag a human once every 48 hours.  Humans may defend  themselves with nerf guns or balled up socks which will “stun” a zombie for some set amount of time. These are some of the core mechanics of the game created at Goucher.  By the time the game got to Stony Brook it had become common practice to include “missions” or objectives for the teams to accomplish that would give them some sort of advantage.

At Stony Brook we had about 600 to 1000 registered players and anywhere from 20 – 300 players participating in missions. Both LARPs lasted for 7 non-stop days.  Specifically in the 2011 fall game I was the lead moderator responsible for guiding the new moderators in the mission development process.  Part of this was working with my team and the other lead moderators to assure we had the resources to preform the missions we were developing and they were working towards our overall goals for the game. The 2011 fall game was a huge success for our team with improved player participation, player satisfaction, and reduced player complaints.
